ONE HOT DOG, PLEASE, WITH A SIDE ORDER OF FRAUD

When Ivan Boesky or Bernie Madoff were indicted for fraud, almost every article mentioned that they were Jewish.  Was that really necessary?  Was it newsworthy?  No.  (And anti-Semites continue to claim that "Jews control the media.")

From the front page, second section of The Denver Post:  “A kosher meat salesman who left a trail of victims on two continents was sentenced to 15 years in prison Friday in a decision cheered by those who were fooled by the smooth-talking hot-dog salesman.   Arnold Zaler, 60, lured victims mostly from his own Jewish community, promising he would pay them back for their investments in his business.”

But when Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, Martha Stewart, Randy Cunningham, and Governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich were involved in criminal patchkerei, not one report disclosed what religion they were.

I personally feel picked on, not chosen.

  1. Howver, if Martha Stewart openly went to church and networked with her congregation for investors, I think it would have indeed been reported as such. Madoff is a schmuck, and unfortunately, didn't help the Jewish cause, but it should be reported for what it was. He in fact DID seek investors through his religious network, and had they not reported it that way, it would have been a lie. By the way, you forgot to mention another shame to Jews...Jack Abramoff. Don't feel picked on...just condemn them and be happy they are in prison.

  2. You are right. People are presumed Christian, and when they are not, the media lets the reader know. WHY?
David Beckham attended the funeral of his beloved grandfather. He was wearing a "kipa" in the photo. The article never mentioned his grandfather was Jewish. HIs grandfather was instrumental in his soccer career. WHY wasn't this relevant? Not to the media.

  4. Any time someone in the news is something other than white and/or Christian, the media will attempt to provide info on age, race, religion, sexual orientation (even for White Christians) and possibly the number of extra toes on the person's feet, because...everyone's wondering anyway. And no one's picking on the Jews, because...everyone's wondering anyway, even the Jews. That's media reporting world-wide, I'm guessing. Even in Israel the media can't assume a person is Jewish and only tag everyone else. (Guessing again.)
