This site is aimed at readers whose last names (a) end with -stein, -man, -son, -berg, -owitz, -baum, and -feld/field, and (b) are or start with Green, Gold, Silver, Roth, Schwartz, and Weis; and anyone named Levy, Cohen, or Lipschitz. (And the rest of you . . . you know who you are.) Now for the switcheroo: Richard Rodgers was Jewish; Oscar Hammerstein's family was Episcopalian. Okay, pretend there’s a segue here, and I'll give you (free! such a bargain!) a pun I wrote. What, you don’t like puns? Read it anyway; it has the virtue of brevity.
Rodgers and Hammerstein were writing the musical South Pacific when they reached a melody/lyrics block. They took the day off to hear a choir perform the semi-musical material written by Gregorian monks. Oscar and Richard came away disappointed because this group lacked talent and energy; their timing was rocky, their voices were unsuitable to the ups and downs of the notes, and altogether it was some uneven chanting.
