THE LITTLE SHABBOS ELEVATOR THAT COULD

Breaking news from Baltimore:  After a two-year legal battle, the board of a nine-story condominium voted to install an elevator that would stop at all floors so that residents wouldn’t have to press a button on Shabbos.

This is MY blog.   Here is MY opinion.

WHAT?  WHAT did they say?  If pressing an elevator button is considered “work,” then how do these residents — for a ‘for instance’ — eat on Shabbos? Doesn’t picking up a spoon to eat your soup on Shabbos take the same amount of effort involved in pressing a button?   My grandparents paid a “Shabbos goy” (beforehand, of course) to turn on the lights for them, or turn off the oven, or whatever.   But they used eating utensils! They turned on the faucets to rinse the plates!   I can certainly understand wanting to be observant, but I think it’s reasonable to establish what is “work” and what isn’t.  Thoughts?

  1. Why did these Jewish people move into that apartment, knowing it didn't have a Shabbos elavator? If they've been pressing buttons on Shabbos for years, and they haven't been struck down yet, what's the point?

  2. Does a Rabbi decide what is "work" and what isn't "work?"
    Just curious...
